Abstract:
The Moliere theory is currently being used in the Monte Carlo programs ICOOL and DPGEANT
to model multiple scattering of muons in various ionization cooling schemes. Paul LeBrun
initially raised the question of how well the model describes our scattering. We continue that
discussion in this paper. We begin by describing the essential features of the Moliere theory. We
examine the theoretical and experimental justification for using the model. Experimental data
indicate that the theory may underestimate the strength of large angle scattering in low Z
materials.
