Abstract:
Muons, Inc., an Illinois corporation working with IIT, submitted an SBIR/STTR grant
application to the DOE in January, 2002 to develop high-gradient, pressurized RF
cavities for muon ionization cooling. This resulted in a phase 1 STTR award of
$100,000, with the possibility of phase 2 funding of up to $500,000. This MUCOOL
note is the application itself, and since it was successful, may serve as a model
for others to use. It also describes the project goals and proposed research plans
to develop high-gradient RF cavities filled with a dense gas, which suppresses
high-voltage breakdown by the Paschen effect and also acts as the energy absorber
for muon ionization cooling.
