Investigation of RFOFO Like Cooling Rings

Abstract

Alternating solenoid focused cooling rings without special bending magnets are investigated
in detail. Bending and closing of particle orbits are achieved by using both edge fields and
inclination of the solenoids in vertical plane. Realistic (Maxwellian) magnetic field is used
in all the cases. Methodic is developed to find closed orbits, dispersion, and region of
stability of any particular design. Cooling with 200 MHz accelerating field and liquid
hydrogen absorbers is simulated. It is shown that the cooler with usual (untilted) solenoids
has unsatisfactory performances because of strong transverse nonlinearities. Additional
vertical magnetic field cardinally improves the situation providing merit factor about 16 at
transmission 85% for considered design. Almost the same characteristics (15/80) are achievable
by inclination of the solenoids on 0.075 rad in vertical plane.
