Abstract:
Fluctuations in pathlength of muons traversing matter are studied by
means of the Gaussian approximation in the context of Monte Carlo simulations
of muon transport.
The method estimates the muon's pathlength corresponding to a Monte Carlo step
from a knowledge of the transverse phase space variables at the beginning and
end of the step.
The step is then halved and pathlength is recalculated.
This is repeated until the result is stable to within a desired tolerance.
An extension to the case where electromagnetic fields are present is described.
A few results obtained with this method are presented by way of illustration.
