Abstract:
The problem of phase space exchange in wedge absorbers with ionization cooling is discussed.
The wedge absorber exchanges transverse and longitudinal phase space by introducing a position-dependent
energy loss. In this paper we note that the wedges used with ionization cooling are relatively thick,
so that single wedges cause relatively large changes in beam phase space. Calculation methods adapted
to such “thick wedge” cases are presented, and beam phase-space transformations through such wedges are discussed.
