Abstract

For a muon cooling experiment, the
set-up of a beam-line
is required which allows to target a high energy
proton beam and to
capture low energy pions coming off the target. After the
decay channel, where the pions decay into muons, the experiment itself
has to be installed. While a detailed layout of an experiment where
single muons are tracked through a cooling device exists, a second
proposal for a bunched muon beam experiment has not
been specified sufficiently well.
Nevertheless at \fermi a collaboration of approximately 17 institutes
has been formed to implement and perform a muon cooling experimental
program. Three different locations at \fermi
have been investigated as experimental areas, where such
experiments could be done. For two of these areas the layout of the
experiment is strongly linked to the single muon tracking experiment
while the third area keeps the option for a bunched muon beam
experiment open.
The long term future
of such an experiment has to be kept in mind as well as
possible extensions towards a real application. This will
allow the evaluation of the pro's and con's of the different
beam-line proposals. All proposals involve more or less civil
construction and/or restoration of beam line installations
as well as upgrades which will be described in sufficient
detail in order to allow a decision in the near future.
